Ravichandran Ashwin

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that Tanush Kotian will replace Ravichandran Ashwin in the Indian squad for the remaining two Tests against Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This decision comes after Ashwin’s unexpected retirement following the conclusion of the third Test at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Replacement announcement

Tanush Kotian, a 26-year-old all-rounder from Mumbai, has been asked to prepare for immediate travel to Australia, with reports indicating he will depart on Tuesday ahead of the crucial Boxing Day Test scheduled for December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Kotian has made a name for himself in domestic cricket, particularly during the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season, where he excelled with both bat and ball. He took 29 wickets across 10 matches at an impressive average of 16.96, while also scoring 502 runs, including five half-centuries and a century. His outstanding performance earned him the title of Player of the Tournament, contributing significantly to Mumbai’s 42nd Ranji title. In addition to his recent achievements, Kotian was part of India’s A team during their tour of Australia prior to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, gaining valuable experience that could prove beneficial as he steps into this high-pressure environment.

Impact on India’s squad

With Ashwin’s retirement, India are left with two spinners in their squad: Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. The addition of Kotian bolsters India’s spin options as they prepare for the final two Tests in a series that currently stands at 1-1 after three matches. The team will be looking to secure a series victory against their arch-rivals.

Upcoming matches

The next two Tests are pivotal for both teams. The first match will take place at the MCG, followed by the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). As India aims to regain momentum in the series, Kotian’s inclusion is seen as a strategic move to enhance their bowling attack and provide depth to their spin department.
