The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the India women’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. The series, a part of the ICC Women’s Championship, will begin on December 5. The first two games are scheduled to be played at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane, with the final match slated for the W.A.C.A. Ground in Perth.

This series marks an important assignment for the Indian women’s team as they aim to solidify their position in the ICC Women’s Championship standings.

Shafali Verma left out, questions loom

India’s star opener, Shafali Verma, has been omitted from the squad. While no official reason has been provided, it is believed that her recent struggles with form could have led to the decision. The BCCI has not mentioned if the exclusion is meant to give her a break or if it is performance-based, leaving fans and analysts speculating about the rationale behind the move. Shafali’s absence leaves a gap at the top of the order, and it will be interesting to see who steps up to fill the role during this crucial series.

Richa Ghosh makes a comeback

Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh has rejoined the squad after missing the ODI leg against New Zealand recently to her board exams. Known for her aggressive batting and sharp keeping skills, Richa’s return adds depth to India’s lower middle-order and provides another wicketkeeping option alongside Yastika Bhatia.

Harmanpreet Kaur retains captaincy amid speculation

Despite ongoing speculation about her future as India’s skipper following the team’s underwhelming campaign in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Harmanpreet Kaur continues to lead the side. Her leadership and experience will be pivotal as India looks to regroup and put up a strong show in Australia.

Smriti Mandhana, India’s star batter and trusted deputy, retains her position as vice-captain. Her consistency at the top of the order and ability to guide younger players make her an integral part of the team’s leadership group.

“The Women’s Selection Committee has picked the Team India (Senior Women) squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. The first two ODIs will be held at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane before the action shifts to WACA Ground, Perth for the final match of the series, which is a part of the ICC Women’s Championship,” read a BCCI release.
