‘The easy thing would be for me to say “Thank you very much”, but the tough thing for me is to work hard for another 9 months and come back and play at least 1 more season of IPL’ – these were the famous words of Chennai Super Kings’ captain MS Dhoni after winning the 5th IPL trophy in 2023. It was all but certain as the fans expected the mercurial captain to walk into the sunset with a trophy cabinet as big as Chennai’s heart, but Dhoni chose to stay for one more season.
And here it is, the ‘one more season’ for Chennai Super Kings under the on-field leadership of MS Dhoni. The five-time champions got into the IPL 2024 Auction with a sorted squad with just a few holes to fill. First off the Chennai franchise needed a replacement for Ambati Rayudu who hung up his boots ahead of the IPL 2024 season. CSK also needed some young hard hitters to come in handy when needed, along with some strengthening in the bowling department.
The Chennai franchise started the auction in their usual nonchalant way, going in for the World Cup winner Travis Head but deciding against him looking at SRH’s pursuit. It was Rachin Ravindra who was backed by the Chennai think tank and successfully roped in as their first player for Rs 1.8 Crore. The young Kiwi batter brings assurance to the top end with his world-class technique against spin as well as pace.
CSK’s next pick in the IPL 2024 auction was the former CSK player Shardul Thakur who was brought in for INR 4 crore. The right-arm fast bowler brings in a lot of experience albeit at a high economy rate. Thakur however is capable enough to contribute with the bat as well, making him a good lower-order batter choice.
The 5 times champions then set their focus on Kiwi all-rounder Daryle Mitchell and broke the bank for the Kiwi all-rounder. At INR 14 Crore, the left-hand batter became CSK’s most expensive signing at the IPL Auction 2024.
Probably the most exciting purchase that CSK made was of Sameer Rizvi, a player nicknamed, ‘Right-handed Suresh Raina’. Rizvi made headlines after a sensational performance in the UPT20 League. In 10 matches, Rizvi scored 455 runs with a brilliant strike rate of 188.8 and an average of 50.
In the accelerated round, CSK bought the services of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman for INR 2 Crores to strengthen their bowling. The Chennai franchise concluded the IPL 2024 auction by getting young batter Avinash Rao Aravelly for INR 20 lakh.
