Yashasvi Jaiswal shines with a spectacular century

India cricket team opener Yashasvi Jaiswal announced his return to form in style on Day 1 of the second Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. After a modest score of 36 in the first Test of the series, Jaiswal’s aggressive yet composed innings helped India assert control over the match. The 23-year-old southpaw scored a 145-ball century, including 16 fours, taking the fans on a roller-coaster ride and making him the toast of Indian cricket once again. His impressive feat puts him in an elite bracket of young Indian batters who have made a significant impact in the longest format.

With this century, Jaiswal now has seven Test hundreds to his name, putting him just behind Sachin Tendulkar in the list of most centuries scored by an Indian batter at such a young age. Only cricket legends like Don Bradman and Gary Sobers surpass his tally. The current list stands as:

  • Don Bradman – 12 centuries
  • Sachin Tendulkar – 11 centuries
  • Gary Sobers – 9 centuries
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal – 7 centuries

Jaiswal’s ability to score consistently at both home and abroad underscores his potential to become one of India’s leading Test batters. His previous home hundreds came in the 2024 series against England, when he registered monumental scores of 209 and 214*. Although he had crossed fifty on several occasions since then, Jaiswal had struggled to convert starts into big hundreds, making this innings even more significant.

Yashasvi’s impressive overseas record

Beyond his home successes, Jaiswal has also proved his mettle in challenging foreign conditions. He has scored two centuries in England, one in Australia, and another in the West Indies, highlighting his adaptability and skill against diverse bowling attacks. With 2,348 runs in 26 Tests at an impressive average of 52.17, Jaiswal has shown remarkable consistency and maturity in his approach, traits that promise a bright future for Indian cricket.

Winning the toss, India elected to bat first in Delhi. KL Rahul, opening alongside Jaiswal, was dismissed for 38 after being stumped by West Indies spinner Warrican. However, Jaiswal’s calm yet aggressive innings steadied the Indian innings and ensured the team did not lose momentum. His century helped India dominate the first day, setting the stage for a potential big lead and putting the visitors under immense pressure.
