Glenn Maxwell on T20 World Cup 2026

Australia‘s explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is gearing up for a more prominent role in next year’s T20 World Cup, with a special focus during the PowerPlay overs. Having embraced the challenge in recent seasons, Maxwell bowled two overs with the new ball in each of the last two T20Is against South Africa and delivered with notable impact.

Glenn Maxwell on making the most of subcontinental conditions

Ahead of the T20I series decider in Cairns, Maxwell explained why bowling early could be a valuable option in the World Cup, which will be played in the subcontinent.

“In the subcontinent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on. The hard seam on the new ball can grip on dry surfaces. It’s definitely something we might think about moving forward,” said Maxwell while talking to reporters.

Notably, the numbers back his case — 17 of Maxwell’s 49 T20I wickets have come in the PowerPlay. In the IPL, since 2022, he has been highly efficient in the first six overs, maintaining an economy rate of 7.30 and claiming eight wickets, including the crucial dismissal of South African captain Aiden Markram in the recent series.

Adapting to changing batting roles

While eyeing a bigger bowling contribution, Maxwell remains ready to adjust his batting position to suit the team. With Travis Head unavailable, he opened in the West Indies to counter left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein. Against South Africa, he batted at No.7 in the first game and No.5 in the second, making the most of a finishing role.

“I’ve been a bit of a shuffler in the order. In the West Indies, I went up top to tackle Hosein; in this series, I’ve dropped lower to control the back end. I’m just trying to be as adaptable as possible,” added Maxwell.
