Former Indian cricket stars Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina have come under fire for a social media video that has sparked controversy among disability advocates. The video, posted by Harbhajan on Instagram following their victory in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2024 against Pakistan, depicts the trio attempting to recreate a dance move from the viral song ‘Tauba Tauba’.

Former Indian Cricketers face criticism over insensitive social media video

In the video, the cricketers mimic a limp, purportedly to humorously portray the physical toll on their bodies after the rigorous tournament.

Body ki Tauba Tauba ho Gayi in 15 days Legends Cricket. Every part of the body is sore. Straight competition to our brothers @vickykaushal09 @karanaujla, our version of Tauba Tauba dance, What a Song”. Harbhajan captioned his post.

Criticism from disability advocates prompts debate on social media sensitivity

However, the video quickly drew criticism from disability advocates and organizations. Arman Ali, Executive Director of the National Centre for Promoting the Employment of Disabled People, labeled the video as “disgraceful” and called upon the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to address and condemn the actions depicted. Satendra Singh, a disability rights advocate, expressed disappointment, pointing out that cricketers like Yuvraj, who has been seen as a role model for battling cancer, should have shown greater sensitivity and empathy in their actions.

Totally disgraceful. No words are sufficient enough to condemn such behaviour specially when displayed by people considered national heroes. Such degrading actions only exposes their total insensitivity and boorishness. https://t.co/B6QSWLLy0a

The incident has reignited discussions about the portrayal of disabilities and the responsibility of public figures in shaping societal attitudes. The BCCI is yet to publicly respond to the controversy surrounding the video.

Critics argued that while the cricketers may have intended the video in jest, its portrayal of disability-related gestures as a form of entertainment is unacceptable and insensitive.

Harbhajan Singh issues an apology

Later, Harbhajan deleted the post from his Instagram account and issued an apology on X. He clarified that he and his teammates did not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments and emphasized his respect for every individual and community.

Just wanted to clear to our people who are complaining about our recent videos of “Tauba Tauba” on social media after winning the championship here in England. We didn’t want to hurt anyone’s sentiments. We respect every individual and community. And this video was just to reflect on our bodies after playing continuous cricket for 15 days. Sore bodies.. we are not trying to insult or offend anyone.. still if people think we have done something wrong ..All I can say from my side. SORRY to everyone .. please let’s stop this here and move forward. Stay happy and healthy. Love to all. Regards,” Harbhajan posted on X.
