In the third ODI of the Australia tour of England 2024, England bounced back with a crucial 46-run victory over Australia via the DLS method, keeping the five-match series alive. The match, played at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, saw England produce a strong performance in pursuit of Australia’s target of 305. After losing the first two games, England came into the contest with pressure mounting, but Harry Brook’s masterful century and Will Jacks’ solid knock turned the tide.

Australia innings: Carey and Smith shine

After England elected to bowl first, Australia posted a competitive total of 304/7 in their 50 overs. The innings was anchored by Alex Carey, who top-scored with a fluent 77 off 65 balls, hitting seven fours and a six. Steve Smith also contributed with a steady 60 off 82 deliveries, while Cameron Green added a valuable 42 off 49 balls. Aaron Hardie provided late fireworks, smashing 44 off just 26 balls, including three fours and two sixes, pushing Australia past 300.

England’s bowling attack struggled to keep a lid on the scoring at times, though Jofra Archer stood out, claiming 2/67 in his 10 overs.

England innings: Harry Brook’s heroics

In reply, England’s innings got off to a rocky start with both openers falling early. Philip Salt was dismissed for a duck in the third over, followed by Ben Duckett for just 8. However, Will Jacks and Harry Brook formed a game-changing partnership, with Jacks scoring 84 off 82 balls, including nine fours and a six, to steady the ship.

The star of the chase was Brook, who played a magnificent knock of 110 off 94 balls, hitting 13 fours and 2 sixes. His fluent strokeplay and ability to find gaps kept England well ahead of the required rate.

By smashing a century in his third game as captain, Brook became the youngest England player to do so.

Liam Livingstone added a quickfire 33 off 20 balls before rain interrupted play. By then, England had raced to 254/4 in 37.4 overs, enough to seal the win via the DLS method.

Mitchell Starc was Australia’s most successful bowler, picking up 2/63 in his 8 overs. Cameron Green also took 2 wickets, but the rest of the bowling attack struggled to contain the English batters.
