In a spectacular display of skill and determination, India clinched victory in the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The Holkar Stadium in Indore is set to witness the clash of these cricketing titans once again on January 14.
Facing a target of 158, the Indian innings encountered early setbacks, stumbling to 28 for 2 in the initial four overs. However, Shivam Dube’s stellar unbeaten 60 off 40 coupled with Jitesh Sharma’s rapid 31 off 20 deliveries ensured a smooth sail for the hosts. This victory was particularly commendable as it came despite the dew factor in Mohali, making the target seem even more manageable. Eager to make a resounding statement after an unfortunate run-out in the first game, Rohit Sharma is expected to deliver an impactful inning at the top.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, absent in the first match due to personal reasons, will be back for the second game, aiming to re-establish his authority in the T20 format after a 14-month hiatus.
The first match highlighted the resilience of India’s young talents, who stepped up admirably in the absence of stellar performances from Rohit and Shubman Gill. With the series advantage, India will be looking to seal the deal in Indore.
Afghanistan eager to stage a comeback
On the other side, Afghanistan face the challenge of bouncing back after a lacklustre performance. Mohammad Nabi’s 42 off 27 was a notable contribution but it was insufficient on a favourable batting surface. Afghanistan will rely heavily on Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who has been in excellent form with 206 runs in his last seven matches, boasting an average of 29.43 and a strike rate of 149.27.
While Ibrahim Zadran’s stroke range could prove vital on the flat track, Afghanistan’s bowling, notably without Rashid appears to lack the necessary bite. The bowlers are likely to face another challenging day on the batting-friendly surface.
