IPL 2025

As the much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 showdown between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) approaches, RCB finisher Tim David has made a bold statement regarding MI’s returning pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

Tim David’s bold game plan: A message for Jasprit Bumrah and a challenge for RCB openers

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, David revealed a daring idea that he believes could set the tone for the encounter. According to him, if RCB openers Virat Kohli and Phil Salt can smash Bumrah’s very first delivery to the boundary, it would send a powerful statement – not just to Mumbai, but to the rest of the tournament.

David’s remarks also show his understanding of the mental side of cricket, particularly in T20s, where momentum can swing with just a single shot. By calling on Kohli and Salt to take the aggressive route from ball one, David is not only making a tactical suggestion but is also rallying his side to show fearlessness against one of the world’s finest.

“If we’re going to go deep in this tournament, we need to beat the best teams and the best players. So, hopefully Bumrah is bowling the first over tomorrow night, and the first ball goes for a four or a six—whoever is opening for us, that’ll be a statement. It’ll be great to have him back in the tournament, because cricket is always better when he’s on the field,” David said.

Bumrah’s return brings spark back to MI

Bumrah’s absence was deeply felt by the Mumbai, who slumped to three losses in their first four games without their bowling spearhead. Now fit and back in the squad, Bumrah’s return is a major boost for MI, and David himself acknowledged that his presence elevates the quality and competitiveness of the IPL. However, David maintained that a team like RCB, aiming for a deep playoff run, must not just face but also overcome such challenges head-on.

Statistically, Bumrah has always been a thorn in RCB’s side. He has bagged 29 wickets in 19 matches against them at a stunning average of 19.03. David, who spent three seasons with Mumbai from 2022 to 2024, has interestingly never faced Bumrah in the IPL. The only head-to-head encounter came in T20 Internationals, where David managed to score 15 runs off 10 balls without being dismissed by the MI pacer.
