The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 kicked off in grand style with a pulsating encounter between Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. The Patriots held their nerve in a dramatic finish to edge past the home side by just one wicket, setting the tone for an exciting tournament ahead.
Antigua and Barbuda set a challenging target
After losing the toss, Antigua and Barbuda were sent in to bat first. Despite losing opener Teddy Bishop early, Fakhar Zaman provided the impetus at the top of the order, smashing 43 off 32 balls with 5 boundaries and 2 sixes. Kofi James and Sam Billings played brief cameos, but it was Jewel Andrew‘s sensational 50 off just 30 deliveries, supported by Fabian Allen‘s 24 off 17, that took Antigua and Barbuda to a competitive total of 163/4 in their 20 overs.
The Patriots’ bowlers faced a challenging task but managed to contain the damage to some extent. Anrich Nortje, Ashmead Nedd, Dominic Drakes, and Tabraiz Shamsi each claimed a wicket, with Nedd being the most economical, conceding only 21 runs in his 4 overs.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots secure a dramatic win
Chasing 164 for victory, the Patriots got off to a brisk start, thanks to their openers Andre Fletcher and Evin Lewis. Fletcher’s quickfire 25 off 16 balls set the tone before Lewis took charge with a 29-run knock off 24 balls, which included 3 towering sixes. Kyle Mayers played a pivotal role in the middle, smashing 39 off 24 balls, and his innings was crucial in keeping the Patriots in the hunt.
However, the Antigua and Barbuda bowlers fought back valiantly. Shamar Springer was the standout performer, bagging 4 wickets for 29 runs in his 4 overs, while Roshon Primus provided excellent support with 2 wickets. Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim also picked up a wicket each, as the game went down to the wire.
Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Patriots held their nerve. Odean Smith‘s 27 off 19 balls added crucial runs lower down the order, and the tail managed to scrape through to the target with just one wicket in hand. Nortje’s unbeaten 4 runs off 3 balls ultimately sealed the win for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.
Mayers was deservedly named the Player of the Match for his brilliant batting performance. His crucial 39 with the bat and his economical bowling helped the Patriots secure a thrilling victory. The opening match of the CPL 2024 lived up to the hype, and if this encounter is any indication, fans can look forward to a tournament filled with excitement and edge-of-the-seat action.
