Lalit Modi reveals the first choice of Shah Rukh Khan’s IPL team he wanted to buy

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has transformed cricket into a global spectacle, blending sports with entertainment. At the heart of this revolution is Lalit Modi, the architect of the IPL, who recently shared insights about its inception and the pivotal role played by Shah Rukh Khan co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Lalit Modi’s revelation of Shah Rukh Khan’s first choice

In a candid interview with Raj Shamani, Modi recounted the early days of the IPL, which launched in 2008. He revealed that KKR was not SRK’s first choice; instead, he initially aimed to acquire the Mumbai Indians (MI). However, with MI owned by Mukesh Ambani, SRK settled for KKR, investing approximately INR 570 crore alongside his friend Juhi Chawla. This decision would prove monumental for both the franchise and the league itself.

“His first choice was Mumbai, but Mukesh Ambani took that. Kolkata was his eventual pick. But Shah Rukh’s real contribution was in making cricket entertaining. He brought women and children into the stadiums, which was critical for the IPL’s success. That’s why we had music, cheerleaders, and a festival-like atmosphere—he turned it into an event for everyone,”  Lait Modi stated.

Modi describes SRK as the pillar of IPL

Modi described SRK as the “pillar” of IPL, emphasizing his influence in making cricket more accessible to women and children.

“Bollywood and cricket sell in this country. I have always been a part of the glamor. Shah Rukh Khan went to school with me; we are school friends. When I approached him for cricket, I didn’t know much about it myself, but I told him, ‘I just want you to be a part of it.’ He was the number one pillar for the IPL,” he added, highlighting how SRK’s star power brought a new demographic to stadiums. His involvement not only attracted fans but also elevated the IPL into a cultural phenomenon, transforming it into an entertainment extravaganza complete with music and cheerleaders.

Modi reminisced about their school friendship and how he approached SRK without much knowledge about cricket. He simply wanted him to be part of this new venture.

“He bid for a team even though he didn’t know anything about cricket,” Modi noted, showcasing SRK’s leap of faith into the world of sports ownership.

The impact of celebrity culture

The fusion of Bollywood and cricket was crucial in shaping the IPL’s identity. Initially, celebrities were paid to attend matches; however, SRK’s participation shifted this dynamic. By the second season, stars like Deepika Padukone and Akshay Kumar sought invitations on their own. This shift underscored how SRK’s involvement not only drew crowds but also set a precedent for celebrity engagement in sports.
