The reigning champions, England, have advanced to the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 after defeating Namibia and benefiting from Australia‘s win against Scotland. England’s final Group B match victory against Namibia was critical, but their advancement also depended on the result of the Australia vs. Scotland game.

With Scotland having the same number of points as England, the Jos Buttler-led side needed Scottish team to lose to ensure their place in the Super 8s. Despite pre-game comments from Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood about wanting to eliminate England, Australia triumphed over Scotland, paving the way for England to move forward in the tournament.

Michael Vaughan’s jibe at Pakistan

After England secured their spot, former English skipper Michael Vaughan took to social media to make a sarcastic comment about Pakistan, who had already been knocked out of the tournament. Vaughan’s tweet quickly attracted attention, adding a layer of intrigue to the tournament.

England vs Namibia: Match affected by rain

The clash between England and Namibia was delayed by three hours due to rain. Once play resumed, the match was shortened to 11 overs per side, and later to 10 overs due to another weather interruption. Namibia opted to field first after winning the toss.

England, needing a win to remain in the competition, posted a score of 122 for five. Namibia’s target was revised to 126 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. They started strong, reaching 34 without loss in the first five overs, but the required run rate became insurmountable. Despite bringing in the big-hitting David Wiese by retiring Nikolaas Davin, Namibia finished at 84 for three, falling short by 41 runs as per the DLS method.
