In anticipation of the upcoming series, Australian pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood shared his thoughts, suggesting that India’s defeat against New Zealand might serve as a wake-up call. Hazlewood, wary of India’s potential to rally after setbacks, believed that the crushing defeat might have triggered a shift in India’s mentality that could make them more dangerous in Australia. He also acknowledged that some of India’s seasoned players are familiar with Australian conditions, but noted that the challenge might be daunting for newer Indian batters who haven’t played extensively in Australia.

“It might awaken a sleeping giant, so to speak. We’ll see that when they come out. It’s obviously better them losing 3-0 than winning 3-0, easily. The confidence might have taken a bit of a hit. A lot of them have been out here, but there’s a few batters who haven’t, so they’ll be a bit unsure of what to expect,” Hazlewood said to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Hazelwood also observed that while India’s recent losses might indicate vulnerabilities, it would be premature to underestimate them. He hinted that Australia, despite its upper hand, would remain cautious, recognizing the unpredictability of a team capable of massive turnarounds.

“I don’t think you can read too much into it. The results are obviously good for us in a way,” the right-arm pacer concluded.

Must-win series to keep WTC final dreams alive

For India, the BGT carries more weight than usual. To boost their WTC ranking and keep their hopes of reaching the championship final intact, India will likely need to win the series by a commanding 4-0 margin, or even a rare 5-0 sweep. However, given Australia’s recent dominance at home and the strength of their bowling lineup, such a victory margin may be a steep ask for India. Even a two-win series could potentially keep India in the race, though they would need to rely on results from other teams to secure a place in the final.
