In a major move, former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The announcement was made by LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka at a press conference in Kolkata on Wednesday, August 28.
Zaheer Khan fills the vacant seat left by Gautam Gambhir
Zaheer, who previously served as the director of cricket and head of global development for the Mumbai Indians (MI) from 2018-2022, will be filling the void left by Gautam Gambhir, who has joined the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their mentor and the Indian national team as head coach.
The 45-year-old left-arm pacer brings a wealth of experience to the LSG setup, having represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs, and 17 T20Is, amassing an impressive tally of 610 international wickets. His role with LSG is expected to be multifaceted, providing guidance and mentorship to the team while also sharing his expertise with the bowlers.
“Muskuraiye hum ab Lucknow mein hain,” Zaheer said in a video shared by LSG on their social media accounts.

Zaheer joins LSG’s star-studded support staff
LSG, who have reached the playoffs in two out of their 3 seasons so far, will be hoping that Zaheer’s appointment will help them take the next step and challenge for the IPL title. The franchise is currently led by KL Rahul and coached by Justin Langer, with a strong support staff including Lance Klusener, Adam Voges and Jony Rhodes.
Zaheer’s addition to the LSG setup is seen as a major coup, as he brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team. His ability to mentor young talent and his understanding of the game will be crucial in helping LSG achieve their goals in the upcoming seasons.
