As the anticipation builds for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has offered a groundbreaking suggestion to elevate the tournament’s stakes and ensure a truly fitting conclusion.

Australian spinner proposes innovative approach to determine champions

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday that the highly anticipated WTC Final will be held at Lord’s from June 11, 2025. However, Australian spinner has proposed a radical change to the format, suggesting a three-match series to crown the ultimate Test champions.

Lyon’s suggestion comes amidst a growing chorus of voices advocating for a more comprehensive approach to the WTC Final. The current format, which involves a single decisive match, has often been criticized for its potential to produce anticlimactic results.

A balanced way to determine a champion

The Australian veteran believes that a three-match series would allow teams to showcase their dominance and resilience across various conditions. Lyon envisions one match each in England, India, and Australia to truly test the mettle of the finalists.

“One thing I would like to see, I’d like to see the World Test Championship Final potentially in a three-match series. That may become a little bit better because you potentially can lose using a Test match in one session where [in a three-match series] it may allow teams to bounce back all your show their dominance and win 3-0. We’re pretty time-poor anyway and that’s going to be a challenge but that’s one thing I would change,” Lyon said in an interview with ICC.

Lyon’s proposal presents a compelling argument for a more equitable and engaging way to determine the WTC champions. While the logistical challenges of implementing such a format are significant, it raises important questions about the future of Test cricket’s most prestigious tournament.

Lyon looks ahead to Border-Gavaskar Trophy

As the Australian team gears up for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, Lyon will have a well-deserved break until November. He is expected to participate in the Sheffield Shield to stay match-fit alongside other key players like Pat Cummins and Steve Smith.

The five-match series, which will commence on November 22, 2024, will undoubtedly be a fierce battle between two cricketing giants. Lyon’s experience and skill will be invaluable to Australia’s hopes of retaining the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
