India overcomes Marco Jansen scare to take 2-1 lead in the T20I series

In a thrilling encounter at SuperSport Park, Centurion, India secured an 11-run victory over South Africa, taking an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series. The match showcased a stunning performance from Tilak Varma, who scored his maiden T20I century, propelling India to a formidable total of 219 runs for 6 wickets.

Tilak Varma’s stellar performance

Tilak Varma’s explosive knock of 107 not out off 57 balls was the highlight of the match. He dominated the South African bowlers, hitting 7 sixes and 8 fours, and formed a crucial partnership with Abhishek Sharma, who contributed a brisk 50 runs off 25 balls. Their partnership of 107 runs for the second wicket laid a solid foundation after India lost opener Sanju Samson for a duck in the first over, bowled by Marco Jansen. Varma’s innings was characterized by aggressive stroke play, particularly in the final overs, where he scored 52 runs off just 22 balls. His performance helped India achieve their second-highest score against South Africa in T20Is.

South Africa’s response

In reply, South Africa fought valiantly but fell short, finishing at 208 for 7. Marco Jansen provided a late surge with a blistering 54 runs off just 17 balls, including five big sixes that kept South Africa in contention until the final overs. Heinrich Klaasen also chipped in with a quick-fire 41 off 22 balls. Despite their efforts, South Africa could not secure the win, largely due to India’s disciplined bowling in the crucial moments of the match. Arshdeep Singh was instrumental for India, taking three wickets for 37 runs and successfully defending the total in the final overs.
