Sanjay Bangar names one change for India in the match against Namibia

As the T20 World Cup 2026 gathers momentum, the defending champions, India, are looking to fine-tune their arsenal ahead of their second Group A fixture. Despite a victory in their opening game against USA, the team’s narrow escape has sparked intense debates regarding the ideal playing XI. Former India batting coach and veteran analyst Sanjay Bangar has now weighed in, suggesting a significant tactical pivot in the bowling department for the upcoming encounter against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

India’s tricky start: A wake-up call for the champions

Team India’s journey to defend their title began on a nerve-wracking note at the Wankhede Stadium. Facing a spirited USA side, the “Men in Blue” found themselves in deep waters early on, struggling against a disciplined bowling attack on a pitch that offered plenty of grip. If not for a heroic, match-saving 84 from captain Suryakumar Yadav, the hosts could have faced a massive upset. The top-order collapse—leaving India reeling at 46/4 in the Powerplay—served as a stark reminder that even as favorites, there is no room for complacency in this tournament.

With the action moving to the capital, Bangar believes the team management should integrate their premier spearhead back into the line-up. Speaking on Star Sports, Bangar advocated for the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the opening game due to workload management following a minor fitness scare. Interestingly, Bangar suggested that the player to make way should be Mohammed Siraj, despite the latter’s impactful performance in Mumbai.

“I certainly see Jasprit Bumrah making it to the playing XI, and the player to miss out would be the in-form Mohammed Siraj,” Bangar remarked.

The suggestion comes as a surprise to some, given Siraj’s rhythm, but Bangar’s rationale centers on the long-term balance of the attack and the necessity of having Bumrah’s lethal accuracy in the middle and death overs as the tournament intensity scales up.

Indian bowlers shine despite batting woes

While the batters faced a trial by fire against the USA, the Indian bowling unit showed why they are considered the most feared in the world. Defending a modest total of 161, the bowlers never allowed the American chase to take flight.

Mohammed Siraj was particularly impressive, finishing with figures of 3/29, including a clinical yorker to seal the game. Arshdeep Singh provided the perfect support with 2/18, ensuring the run rate remained under control. This collective brilliance allowed India to secure a 29-run win, but Bangar’s comments suggest that the quest for perfection might lead to a change in the winning combination as they prepare to face Namibia this Thursday.
