Shama Mohamed reacts at her body shaming comment on Rohit Sharma

Shama Mohamed, a Congress spokesperson, has found herself at the center of a heated controversy after her now-deleted X post targeting Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma sparked widespread outrage. The comment, posted on March 3, 2025, labeled Rohit as “fat” and “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had,” prompting a fierce backlash from fans, cricketing legends, and political figures alike. In response, Shama has stood her ground, offering an explanation that has only fueled the fire rather than doused it.

The controversial comment on Rohit Sharma

Shama’s original tweet didn’t mince words. Taking aim at Rohit—who has led India to milestones like the 2024 T20 World Cup victory—she questioned his physical fitness and leadership, igniting an immediate uproar. Cricket fans flooded X with defenses of Rohit’s illustrious career, while former players like Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh stepped in to laud his achievements and resilience. The post, though quickly deleted amid the storm, had already set off a chain reaction that Shama couldn’t ignore.

Shama Mohamed issues clarification over her viral comment

Shama reacted to the backlash with a mix of defiance and justification. Far from offering an apology, she doubled down, asserting her right to critique Rohit by comparing him to past Indian captains like MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, and Virat Kohli—all celebrated for their fitness and leadership.

“It was just a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It is not body shaming. I always believe a sportsperson has to be fit. So I felt he’s a bit overweight and I just tweeted on that,” said Shama while speaking to ANI.

She reckoned that her comment was reasonable and that the outrage is an overreaction, positioning her as a victim of unwarranted criticism rather than a perpetrator of body shaming or unfair judgment.

“I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying?” added Shama.
