High expectations from Jasprit Bumrah

Among the top contenders, India are expected to make a significant impact, boasting a formidable squad with a mix of experienced players and dynamic youngsters. Spearheading India’s bowling attack is the indomitable Jasprit Bumrah, whose lethal yorkers and death-overs prowess make him a key player to watch. As India aim for glory, much will depend on Bumrah’s ability to deliver under pressure and guide the team through challenging matches.

Bumrah throws light onto his mastery of bowling yorkers

Currently in the USA as part of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad, Bumrah has shared intriguing insights into how he mastered the art of bowling yorkers. Speaking to the ICC, Bumrah revealed that his journey began with playing a lot of tennis-ball and rubber-ball cricket during his childhood.

“So I played a lot of tennis-ball, rubber-ball cricket when I was growing up. I used to play a lot with my friends in summer camps. And on summer vacations. Or whenever you used to get a lot of time,” said Bumrah.

Bumrah’s fascination with fast bowling and his determination to replicate what he saw on television drove him to perfect his skills.

“So when I was a kid, I used to think that this is the only way to get wickets. Because I was a fan of fast bowling. I was really fascinated by what I saw on the television. So I tried to replicate that,” he added.

Secret behind delivering yorkers consistently

Bumrah reflected on the efficacy of bowling yorkers in tennis-ball cricket and emphasizes the importance of repetition in honing this skill. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding whether the technique is a well-kept secret or not but emphasizes that consistent practice is key to mastering it. The fast bowler underscored the significance of continually refining and strengthening one’s skills, highlighting the necessity of both natural talent and dedicated practice in achieving excellence on the cricketing field.

“Is it (tennis-ball cricket) a secret (to bowling yorkers) or not? I don’t know. But repetition surely is. Because I have kept this delivery. I still practice it. I keep on practicing it. Because every skill that you develop, you have to practice it and make it stronger. So I think a combination of both would be the answer,” Bumrah added further.
