Sammons drew comfort from the venue shift to Chennai, noting that the MA Chidambaram Stadium’s larger boundaries could work in his team’s favour compared to the more compact Wankhede where West Indies feasted.
“Chennai will be a bit bigger (ground) and it probably will be a little bit more at ease in that aspect there,” Sammons observed. The slower, traditionally spin-friendly Chepauk surface could assist Zimbabwe’s pace-off specialists like Raza and Muzarabani, who thrive when batters cannot simply muscle the ball over short boundaries.
However, the relaid Chennai surface has behaved differently during this tournament, offering better pace and carry than in previous years—a factor that could challenge Zimbabwe’s assumptions.
