In Match 3 of Group B at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on Saturday (July 20), Thailand Women secured a 22-run victory against Malaysia Women in the Women’s Asia Cup 2024, despite Wan Julia’s valiant effort. Thailand set a target of 134 runs, which Malaysia failed to chase, ending their innings at 111/8 in 20 overs.

Thailand’s innings: Setting a competitive target

Thailand began their innings aggressively, with Nattaya Boochatham scoring a brisk 18 off 10 balls, including 4 boundaries. However, the team faced early setbacks as Nannaphat Chaihan and Boochatham were dismissed within the first three overs. Nannapat Koncharoenkai provided stability with a solid 40 off 35 balls, while Phannita Maya contributed 29 off 28 balls. Despite frequent wickets, Thailand managed to post a competitive total of 133/6 in their 20 overs.

Wan Julia’s lone battle for Malaysia

In their chase for 134, Malaysia struggled to maintain a steady run rate. Captain Winifred Duraisingam scored 22 off 28 balls, but it was Wan Julia’s innings that stood out as she top-scored with 52 off 53 balls. The rest of the batting lineup fell short of significant contributions, with only Elsa Hunter reaching double figures. Thailand’s disciplined bowling and fielding efforts were instrumental in restricting Malaysia to 111/8 in 20 overs, securing a comfortable victory for Thailand.

Julia’s remarkable performance was the highlight of Malaysia’s innings. Despite scoring 52 off 53 balls and providing a lone fight for her team, the lack of substantial support from her batting partners was detrimental. Her effort, while commendable, was not enough to steer Malaysia to victory.

Thailand’s experience in defending low scores paying off. They are feeding off the nervousness and lack of confidence from the Malaysian lower order/tail. That opening over where Malaysia conceded 15+ really hurting them now. #AsiaCup2024 #WomensAsiaCup
