In a recent social media exchange, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer directed sharp criticism towards former England captain Michael Vaughan regarding Vaughan’s proposal to revamp Test cricket. Vaughan, utilizing the platform X (formerly known as Twitter), advocated for a significant overhaul of the Test cricket format.

Michael Vaughan calls for Test cricket reorganization

After England’s victory over Sri Lanka in the Lord’s Test, Vaughan had suggested that the sport should be reorganized into two divisions of six teams each to ensure a fairer distribution of benefits across all participating nations.

Test cricket needs to be 2 Divisions of 6 ASAP and spread the wealth of the game more evenly across all countries,” Vaughan wrote on his X.

Wasim Jaffer Responds with sarcasm to Vaughan’s proposal

Jaffer, who is known for his social media funny takes, responded to Vaughan’s tweet with a touch of sarcasm, pointing out what he perceived as Vaughan’s timing rather than the substance of the proposal.

“Timing is everything. And Michael is a wise man who understands that. That’s why he didn’t tweet this a month ago when the WTC table looked like this #WTC25 #ENGvSL,” Jaffer replied to Vaughan’s tweet.

Jaffer’s comment implied that Vaughan’s call for restructuring Test cricket might be influenced by England‘s recent rise in the ICC World Test Championship rankings. At the time Vaughan made his proposal, England were languishing in 9th place. However, following a string of victories against the West Indies and Sri Lanka, England have surged to 5th place in the WTC rankings.

Jaffer’s tweet suggested that Vaughan’s sudden enthusiasm for a division system could be linked to England’s improved position, questioning why the former cricketer didn’t advocate for such a change when England were struggling. Jaffer’s response highlighted the notion that Vaughan’s timing might be conveniently aligned with England’s recent successes rather than a consistent, long-term vision for the game.
