West Indies, the co-hosts of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, showcased their prowess in a commanding Group C clash against Uganda at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Saturday. The Caribbean side delivered a stellar performance, securing a comprehensive victory by a staggering 134 runs. This win significantly bolstered their chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

West Indies bowlers’ brilliant performance

After setting a competitive total of 173/5, the West Indies bowlers unleashed a relentless attack, dismissing Uganda for a paltry 39 runs in just 12 overs. Akeal Hosein spearheaded the bowling assault with a remarkable five-wicket haul, dismantling the Ugandan batting lineup. Except for tailender Juma Miyagi, who remained unbeaten on 13, no other Ugandan batter managed to reach double figures. The collective effort of the Windies bowlers left Uganda reeling, cementing the Caribbean side’s dominance.

Andre Russell bowls a beauty to dismiss Robinson Obuya

Among the standout moments of the match was Andre Russell‘s exquisite delivery that cleaned up Robinson Obuya. The incident took place on the first ball of the fourth over of Uganda’s innings. Russell bowled a good length delivery with a hint of outswing, which Obuya, failing to move his feet adequately, missed entirely, resulting in his stumps being shattered. The delivery exemplified Russell’s skill and precision, contributing to Uganda’s swift collapse.

Rovman Powell praises team’s performance

Following the match, West Indies skipper Rovman Powell expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and highlighted their improvement from the previous game. He noted that the team was somewhat lackluster in their opening match, operating at only 60 percent capacity due to some rustiness. However, in this game, they stepped up their performance to around 70-80 percent.

Powell praised Hosein for his exceptional bowling, underscoring why he is ranked number three in the format, and acknowledged his consistency against top teams. Powell emphasized the importance of playing well in challenging conditions and appreciated the support of the Guyanese crowd, which added to the team’s motivation and energy.

“We talk about improving. We were a little flat in the first game. We had some rust in the first game. We were 60 percent in the first game. Now, we are operating at 70-80 percent. Credit to Akeal, no wonder why he is the number 3 ranked bowler in this format. He has done the same against top sides as well. He bowled wicket to wicket and did his job. Cricket isn’t that easy here and teams need to play well. The Guyanese crowd have been superb,” said Powell at the post-match presentation.
