England Test captain Ben Stokes suffered a potentially serious hamstring injury while playing for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred 2024 on Sunday, August 11.

Ben Stokes forced to leave the field

The all-rounder was forced to leave the field after clutching his leg while completing a single after playing attempting a scoop shot against Manchester Originals’ pacer Ollie Robinson.

Stokes was immediately taken to the hospital for further assessment. To the relief of fans, he returned to the stadium an hour later, albeit on crutches. The England star was seen shaking hands with the opposition and even signing autographs for supporters.

Despite losing their talisman, the Superchargers managed to secure a seven-wicket victory over the Manchester Originals thanks to impressive innings from Nicholas Pooran, Harry Brook and Adam Hose.

“Doesn’t look great unfortunately, will get a scan tomorrow and see how it is,” Brook said of Stokes’ injury in the post-match presentation.

Stokes ruled out of The Hundred 2024

Stokes was expected to feature in all four of the Northern Superchargers’ group stage matches in The Hundred, with the potential for further involvement in the knockout rounds.

Stokes faced just one ball in his first match, being dismissed by Tim Southee. He managed to score two runs in a rain-affected game in Cardiff but has now been ruled out of the final group match against London Spirit due to his injury.

The full extent of Stokes’ injury is yet to be determined, but the incident has cast a shadow over his participation for England in the forthcoming Test series versus Sri Lanka.
