In a match that saw Trent Rockets emerge victorious over Northern Superchargers in the fourth encounter of The Hundred 2024, one moment stood out as a highlight reel candidate. Australian all-rounder Chris Green produced a breathtaking diving catch to dismiss Superchargers captain Matthew Short.

Chris Green’s spectacle in the outfield

The incident unfolded on the 29th ball of the Superchargers’ innings. Lewis Gregory, bowling a good length delivery, induced a big heave from Short. The ball, carrying more height than distance, drifted towards the long-on boundary. It was at this point that Green, stationed at mid-on, showcased his athleticism.

With incredible speed, Green raced backwards towards the boundary rope. As the ball descended, he launched himself into the air, stretching every sinew in his body. In a moment that defied gravity, Green managed to pluck the ball out of thin air with both hands while his body was almost parallel to the ground. The crowd at Headingley, Leeds, erupted in applause as the fielder completed one of the most spectacular catches seen in recent memory.

Match summary

The match itself was a one-sided affair, with the Rockets proving too strong for Superchargers. Batting first, the Rockets posted a formidable total of 185/5 in their allotted 100 balls. A blistering cameo from Green himself, who scored 25 runs off just 7 balls, was instrumental in their innings.

In reply, the Superchargers were never truly in the hunt. Despite a promising start, they lost wickets at regular intervals. Gregory and Green were the pick of the bowlers for the Rockets, claiming two and three wickets, respectively. A late flourish from Ben Dwarshuis, who scored a quickfire 40, provided some consolation for the Superchargers, but it was too little too late, taking their score to 138/8 in 100 balls.

The win propelled Trent Rockets further up the points table, while Northern Superchargers will be looking to bounce back in their next match. However, the day belonged to Green, whose stunning catch will be replayed for years to come.

The Australian all-rounder was undoubtedly the star of the show, with his all-round performance. His blistering batting and sensational fielding earned him the Player of the Match award.
