The 18th match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 between the Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, featured an extraordinary moment that left fans in awe. During the match, a bizarre incident occurred when a batter’s shot inadvertently struck the umpire, creating a memorable highlight in a game already filled with drama.
A lucky escape for the umpire
The unusual event unfolded in the 19th over of the Hurricanes’ innings when Sydney Sixers’ bowler Ben Dwarshuis delivered a full and straight delivery to Chris Jordan. Jordan drove the ball aerially back toward the bowler, and Dwarshuis managed to get a hand on it but failed to complete the catch. As the ball ricocheted off his hand, it struck the back of the umpire, who had turned around in an attempt to avoid the incoming ball. Fortunately, the ball’s pace was reduced due to Dwarshuis’ touch, and the umpire escaped unharmed.
