The 15th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024 between Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers took place at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, and it was nothing short of a thrilling encounter. In a nail-biting finish, the Sydney Sixers clinched a victory by 6 runs, but it was Sophie Ecclestone‘s sensational fielding that stole the show.

Sophie Ecclestone exhibits her tremendous fielding skills

The pivotal moment came on the final ball of the 16th over bowled by Caoimhe Bray. Molly Strano, in an attempt to keep the score moving, guided the ball towards the widish long-on, where Ecclestone was positioned. Strano set off for a quick single, anticipating that she would comfortably make it to the non-striker’s end.

However, Ecclestone had other ideas. Without a second’s hesitation, she aimed at the stumps, hitting the bullseye and running Strano out just short of her crease. The run-out was a display of exceptional accuracy and sharp thinking in a crucial moment, adding an exciting chapter to the match.

Sydney Sixers win a thrilling contest

In the match itself, Sydney Sixers posted a total of 155/7 after being asked to bat first. Captain Ellyse Perry led the charge for the Sixers with a standout innings of 86 runs off 62 balls, including 11 fours and 2 sixes. Her knock anchored the innings and guided the Sixers to a competitive total.

Hobart Hurricanes, chasing the target, put up a valiant effort but fell just short, ending their 20 overs at 149/9. Despite strong contributions from their batters, the Hurricanes were unable to close the gap. For the Sixers, Ecclestone (2/22), Lauren Cheatle (2/32), and Bray (2/13) were the key wicket-takers, each claiming two wickets to help their side secure victory.
