The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024 delivered an electrifying contest at the Adelaide Oval, where the Sydney Sixers registered a thrilling three-wicket victory over the Melbourne Renegades, successfully chasing down a challenging target of 179 with an over to spare.

Courtney Webb and Georgia Wareham guide Melbourne Renegades to 178/8

The Sixers won the toss and opted to bowl first, putting the Renegades’ batting line-up to the test. The Renegades started with steady contributions from their top order, led by Courtney Webb’s 43 off 39 balls, which included 6 fours. However, it was Georgia Wareham who stole the spotlight with an explosive knock, scoring 61 off 31 balls. Wareham’s knock featured 4 fours and 4 towering sixes, injecting the Renegades’ total with much-needed momentum and pushing them to a competitive 178/8 in their 20 overs.

Despite Wareham’s heroics, the Sixers’ bowlers kept their composure. Ellyse Perry (4 overs, 2/25) and Sophie Ecclestone (4 overs, 2/35) led the way, controlling the run rate and taking crucial wickets at vital moments. Courtney Sippel also contributed with two wickets in her three overs, though she conceded 33 runs.

Ellyse Perry smashes her fastest half-century for Sydney Sixers

In pursuit of 179, the Sixers made a solid start with the help of their captain Ellyse Perry and Hollie Armitage. Perry’s knock of 81 off 38 balls showcased her incredible power and finesse, as she smashed 11 fours and 3 sixes to anchor the chase. Her aggression was complemented by a crucial contribution from Armitage, who scored 30 off 23 balls.

The Renegades bowlers fought back, with Wareham shining yet again as she claimed 3 wickets for 26 runs in her 3 overs. Alice Capsey also made an impact, taking 2/22 from her 3 overs. Their efforts created some nervous moments for the Sixers, but Sarah Bryce’s gritty knock of 36 not out took them over the finish line.
