The Netherlands are in for an uphill task as they take on Australia in the 24th match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 in Delhi on Wednesday, October 24. This might seem like an uneven contest on paper but teams like Afghanistan and Netherlands have already shown in this year’s marquee event that they have what it takes to topple the giants of world cricket.
The Dutch side managed to upset South Africa earlier in the tournament and will look to pick up their second monumental win when they face the former five-time champions Australia at the high-scoring Arun Jaitley Stadium. There are some exciting cricketers in the Netherlands line-up. Let’s take a look at three Dutch players who could make a difference against the mighty Aussies.
3. Bas de Leede – The talismanic all-rounder is the leading wicket-taker for the Netherlands so far in the competition. He has seven wickets in four games. De Leede scored an elegant half-century against Pakistan in the first game and also picked up a four-for. The subsequent games haven’t been as fruitful for the 23-year-old but he has the skills to come good against a strong Australian side.
2. Logan van Beek – The Christchurch-born is another player who has the ability to change the course of the game with his all-round exploits. In the previous game against Sri Lanka, Van Beek scored an excellent 75-ball 59 after arriving at the crease when the Netherlands were precariously poised at 91/6. The 33-year-old starred with the ball during Netherlands’ famous win against South Africa, finishing with figures of 3/60.
1. Scott Edwards – The Netherlands captain has led his side commendably. He averages 41.33 and has a strike rate of 108.77 so far in the tournament. In the game against the Proteas, Netherlands were reeling at 82/5 when Edwards walked out to bat. He scored an unbeaten 69-ball 78 to take his team to 245/8 and it proved to be enough in the rain-curtailed clash. The 27-year-old has the ability to play well under pressure and that could hold his team in good stead against Australia.
