Bangladesh and England face each other in match seven of the 2023 ODI World Cup in Dharamsala on Tuesday, October 10.
The two teams started their respective World Cup campaigns on different notes. While Bangladesh pulled off a comfortable victory against Afghanistan, England suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of New Zealand.
Shakib Al Hasan led by example against Afghanistan in Dharamsala as he picked up a three-for. He was well-supported by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who also picked up three wickets. Except for Mahmudullah, who bowled just one over, every Bangladeshi bowler took at least one wicket to dismiss the Afghans for just 156 in 37.2 overs. In reply, openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das couldn’t get going but half-centuries from Mehidy and Najmul Hossain Shanto settled the early nerves and helped their side en route to a six-wicket win with 15.2 overs to spare.
England started off with a game against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. On the back of Joe Root’s 86-ball 77 and a quickfire 43 off 42 from captain Jos Buttler, England posted 282/9 in their 50 overs. The Kiwis made a mockery of the run-chase as Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra hit unbeaten centuries to take their team home with nine wickets left in the bank and 82 balls to spare.
In the 24 matches played between these two teams, England won 19, while Bangladesh won five. Buttler’s men will start as the favourites but they will know that the ‘Bangla Tigers’ are a dangerous side in ODI cricket, especially in sub-continental conditions. These two teams played, against each other, earlier this year, when England traveled to Bangladesh for a white-ball series. England won the first two games in the three-match series before the hosts got a consolation victory in the inconsequential last match.
