Back in 2017, on March 15, Bangladesh made their 100th Test appearance in the second Test of the series against Sri Lanka in Colombo. After losing the first Test, Bangladesh were keen on making their mark in the second game, and they did just that as, batting first, Sri Lanka managed to put 338 runs on the board in the first innings.
It was the excellent spell of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who took three wickets and conceded 90 runs in 21 overs that hindered the hosts’ plans to put even more runs on the board. Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, and Subashis Roy took two wickets each to further mount the pressure on Sri Lanka.
Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar provided Bangladesh with just the start that they needed in their first innings, as both players scored 49 and 61 runs, respectively. Furthermore, Imrul Kayes and Sabbir Rahman played important knocks as well. However, it was the marvellous century of Shakib Al Hasan that propelled Bangladesh on their way to victory.
Shakib scored 116 runs off 159 deliveries, which was followed up by half-centuries from both Mushfiqur Rahim and Mosaddek Hossain. The second innings saw another resilient performance by Sri Lanka’s batting order, as they scored 319 runs on the board.
It was Dimuth Karunaratne who notched up 126 runs off 244 deliveries and was an important factor in Sri Lanka’s quest for a victory. Dilruwan Perera also scored 50 runs, and Bangladesh had to chase 191 runs to clinch a victory in their landmark 100th Test game.
Tamim Iqbal came through once again for the visitors as he scored 82 runs off 125 deliveries as Bangladesh scripted a marvellous victory in the landmark game. Sabbir Rahman also scored 41 runs as Mushfiqur Rahim propelled his side to victory.
Tamim was named Player of the Match for his sensational knocks across the two innings. Their win in the second Test was also Bangladesh’s first win against Sri Lanka in Test cricket.
