On 8th December 2011, Virender Sehwag, leading the Indian side in place of the rested MS Dhoni, achieved a remarkable milestone in one-day cricket. He became just the second player globally to breach the 200-run mark in One-Day International (ODI) innings. His stellar knock of 219 runs off 149 deliveries came during the fourth ODI against the West Indies in Indore.
The dynamic right-hander reached the 200-run milestone in a breathtaking 140 balls, demonstrating his explosive batting prowess. His first 100 runs came off a mere 69 balls, setting the stage for an exhilarating innings. His innings was filled with 25 boundaries and seven mighty sixes, showcasing his aggressive yet effective batting style. Additionally, his innings saw him surpass the 8,000-run mark in ODIs, further cementing his status as a prolific run-scorer.
This monumental innings not only marked the Nawab of Najafgarh’s 15th ODI century but also his first as captain. It surpassed his previous highest score of 175 runs against Bangladesh during the 2011 World Cup. Notably, his remarkable performance propelled the Indian team to its highest-ever total of 418/5, setting a new record.
Drawing parallels with Sachin Tendulkar’s historic double century in 2010 against South Africa, the Delhi batter’s innings was a display of sheer determination and skill. However, his achievement wouldn’t have been possible without a stroke of luck, as West Indies skipper Darren Sammy dropped Sehwag when he was batting on 170, proving to be a crucial turning point.
Virender’s incredible innings, accumulating 142 runs solely from boundaries, was pivotal in India clinching the five-match series 3-1 against the West Indies. His aggressive yet effective batting propelled India to victory and etched his name alongside cricketing greats in the record books.
