Few people have got the New Year off to a rollicking start as Corey Anderson did on the 1st of January 2014 by shattering the long-standing record of the fastest hundred in ODIs. After West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo won the toss and elected to bat first in the rain-curtailed 21-over game, little did he know that he was going to be at the receiving end of a historic knock.
The Kiwis got off to a brisk start as they were 84/3 after 7.4 overs with Martin Guptill (1 off 7), Brendon McCullum (33 off 11) and Ross Taylor (9 off 8) back in the pavilion. Corey Anderson walked in at number five and unleashed his wrath on West Indies.
The Christchurch-born batter started his innings in style scoring a half century off just 20 balls with the help of two fours and six sixes. There was no looking back for the southpaw who immediately shifted gears and shattered record books.
Anderson registered the fastest hundred ever in ODIs reaching the landmark in just 36 balls. With his feat, he surpassed Shahid Afridi’s record of fastest century which he achieved in his first ODI innings in just 37 balls. Anderson finished his innings on 131* off 47 balls clobbering six fours and 14 sixes. He was well supported by Jesse Ryder who also scored a scintillating hundred (104 off 51).
The duo put on a massive 191 off 75 balls fourth wicket as New Zealand posted a massive score of 283/4 in their allotted 21 overs. In reply, West Indies could only score 124/5 with captain Dwayne Bravo top-scoring with 56* (54). As a result, New Zealand won the match by 159 runs and Anderson was deservedly awarded Player of the Match.
