The 2023 Ashes is scheduled to begin on June 16 and conclude on July 31. The five-match Test series between England and Australia is scheduled to be played at five different venues in England – Edgbaston, Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford, and The Oval.
England are coming off a 10-wicket win over Ireland in the one-off Test at Lord’s recently. Meanwhile, the Pat Cummins-led side is currently playing against India in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final at The Oval.
Here are three spinners to watch out for as cricket’s oldest rivalry begins:
Nathan Lyon
Nathan Lyon is one of the off-spinners to watch out for in the forthcoming Ashes series. He was crucial for the Pat Cummins-led side in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, finishing as their highest wicket-taker. He picked up 22 wickets in six innings at an average of 22.36. The 35-year-old, who has been Australia’s first-choice red-ball spinner for several years, will be aiming to help Aussies to regain the prestigious urn.
Moeen Ali
All-rounder Moeen Ali has come out of Test retirement and will join the Ben Stokes-led side for the Ashes as Jack Leach has been ruled out of the series. He last played a four-match Test series against India at home, which they lost by 2-1. So far, he has picked up 195 wickets from 112 innings at an average of 36.66.
Todd Murphy
Young spinner Todd Murphy is one of the off-spinners to watch out for in the upcoming Ashes series against England. The 22-year-old, who made his Test debut in the recent four-match series against India was instrumental for Australia. He picked up 14 wickets from six innings at an average of 25.21. He impressed everyone in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and would look to continue the same.
