India clinched their eighth Asia Cup title as they beat Sri Lanka by ten wickets in the final on Sunday, September 17 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. After opting to bat first Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 50 courtesy of a sensational spell by Mohammad Siraj (6/21). In reply, India comfortably chased down the target in 6.1 overs as Ishan Kishan (23* off 18) and Shubman Gill (27* off 19) took their team home.
Throughout the tournament, there were several players who stood up for India time and again and played a pivotal role in helping them clinch their eighth title. On that note, let’s take a look at three stand-out players from India’s Asia Cup journey.
1. Shubman Gill
The 24-year-old finished as the highest run-scorer of the tournament having scored 302 runs from six innings at an average of 75.50 and a strike rate of 93.49 with one hundred and two fifties to his name. Gill’s best innings of the tournament came against Bangladesh as he played a knock of 121 (133) in a losing cause on a spin track.
2. Kuldeep Yadav
The left-arm spinner was awarded Player of the series for picking nine wickets in the tournament from four innings at an average of 11.44 and an economy of 11.44. Kuldeep picked up a sensational 5/25 vs Pakistan another 4/43 vs Sri Lanka to help India qualify for the final of the event.
3. Hardik Pandya
The seam all-rounder played a crucial role with both bat and ball and was a silent contributor to India’s victory. Pandya played a crucial innings of 82 (81) vs Pakistan in the Group stage game and rescued the innings from 66/4. He further picked up the crucial scalp of Babar Azam in the next fixture against the arch-rivals followed by a spell of 3/3 in the final helping India clean up the tail. Pandya finished the tournament with 92 runs from two innings and six wickets from four innings.
