The third game of the 2023 Women’s Big Bash League is set to take place at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium, featuring the Perth Scorchers against the Hobart Hurricanes. Both teams have made changes to their squads this season, bidding farewell to some key players.
Last year, the Hurricanes made it to the top four but suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the Eliminator against Brisbane Heat. On the other hand, the Perth Scorchers finished in fifth place, narrowly missing out on qualification for the playoffs.
The absence of Mignon du Preez will be felt by the Hurricanes, but they still have captain Ellyse Villani and all-rounder Heather Graham to provide firepower in the middle order. However, the departure of two bowling all-rounders may affect their bowling variety.
The Perth Scorchers maintain a promising squad despite a few changes and are expected to have an improved bowling attack. A victory against such a strong opponent in their season opener would greatly boost the Hurricanes’ confidence.
Captain Ellyse Villani may open alongside Lizelle Lee until they find a quality opener. The addition of Tabatha Saville adds depth to their squad, but Villani and Graham have shouldered the middle order for too long. They will need Naomi Stalenberg and Nicola Carey to step up and contribute.
The Scorchers, led by Sophie Devine, have a solid squad even without key all-rounder Marizanne Kapp. Amy Jones joins the team to strengthen the batting department. The opening duo of Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine, along with number three batter Chloe Piparo, form a strong top order. Jones and Piparo will be crucial in building partnerships during the middle overs.
With the likes of Lisa Griffith and Stella Campbell joining the squad, the Scorchers boast a strong bowling attack. Overall, they hold a slight advantage in this contest due to their well-rounded lineup.
The Aurora Stadium in Launceston has an average 1st innings score of 130 runs. A competitive 1st innings score is expected to be around 140-150 runs. The pitch is anticipated to provide slightly more support to the batters than the bowlers.
