It is great news for all the Kabaddi lovers in India. The dates for the Asian Championship are out. The multilateral tournament will happen between June 27 to June 30. South Korea are the designated hosts for the Asian Championship. After a long gap of six years, Kabaddi makes a comeback to the international stage.
The last time the Asian Championship took place was way back in 2017. It took place in Gorgan Iran.The final of the tournament was played by India and Pakistan and it was an amazing encounter. The Indian Team trumped the Pakistan Team and were crowned as tournament winners. India beat Pakistan 36-22.
As India won the Asian Championship last time, they will be entering the 2023 edition as defending champions. Kabaddi is one sport where the Indians wear their heart on their sleeve and give it their all. In eight Asian Championship editions that have been played so far since 1980, India have risen head and shoulders above the other teams.
They have a great record in the Asian Championship as India have bagged eight medals in the history of the tournament so far. Iran has won the Championship once in 2003. They will be a side to watch out for and could be the dark horses of this tournament.
The Indian Women’s Team has done very well when it comes to the Asian Championship too. They have emerged victorious in the last four editions of the tournament and they have also bagged four gold medals. In the 2017 final, India flexed their muscles against South Korea and won by a huge margin of 42-20 in Iran.
The South Korean Women’s side has tasted victory once in the Women’s edition. The Trials for the Indian Men’s squad will take place on May 17 which will be held at the Patliputra Sports Complex. An experienced trio of coaches will select the players for the tournament from a large pool of 41 players.
