Seven-time champions set to defend their title at Asian Kabaddi Championships 2023

After a long gap of six years, Asian Kabaddi Championships is finally back. 2017 was the last time the tournament was played. The tournament took place in Gorgan of Iran, where India beat Pakistan to clinch the title. With seven titles to their name, the Indian Kabaddi team is the most successful in Asian Kabaddi championships.  

The schedule for the 2023 Asian Kabaddi championships is out. Six teams – India, the Republic of Korea, Iran, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, and Japan, will take part in the event. India’s campaign will start with a challenge from the Republic of Korea. The seven-time champions will then face Chinese Taipei, Japan, Iran, and Hong Kong in the Championship. The top two teams from the league stage will play the final.  

India has picked a squad comprising twelve members for the tournament taking place from June 27 to 30. The players that performed well in the PRO Kabaddi League are considered for the selections. The Indian squad consists of some top raiders over the last few seasons of PKL like Pawan Sehrawat, Arjun Deshwal, and Naveen Kumar. The defensive unit has the likes of Sunil Kumar, Nitesh Kumar, Surjeet Singh, and Parvesh Bhainswal. 

The tournament acts as a forerunner to all the teams before the upcoming Asian games to be hosted by China in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8. The live streaming of the Asian Kabaddi Championship will be accessible to the viewers on the official YouTube channel of the tournament in India. However, there wouldn’t be live telecasting on any TV channels in India. 

Indian squad for the tournament is as follows: 

Naveen Kumar, Arjun Deshwal, Aslam Inamdar, Sachin, Sunil Kumar, Mohit Goyal, Nitin Rawal, Parvesh Bhainswal, Surjeet Singh, Nitesh Kumar, Pawan Sehrawat, Vishal Bharadwaj. 

Vijay Malik and Sanjeev Kumar are the standby players. The team is coached by Sanjeev Kumar and Ashan Kumar. Bhaskaran Edachery will manage the squad.
