In the 24th over, Cummins bowled a delivery that lured Rohit into a drive, resulting in an outside edge that was easily caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey. This dismissal was reminiscent of Rohit’s long-time teammate Virat Kohli’s struggles with similar deliveries, highlighting a concerning trend in his batting approach.

While Rohit’s performance was disappointing, Rahul emerged as a beacon of hope for India amidst the turmoil. After Rohit’s departure, Rahul played a resilient innings of 84 runs, showcasing intelligent shot selection and an ability to handle pressure. He formed a crucial partnership of 67 runs with Ravindra Jadeja, who contributed a solid half century but was dismissed for 77. Together, they managed to stabilize the innings after a dismal start at 74 for five. Their efforts provided India with a fighting chance to post a competitive total against Australia’s formidable first innings score of 445.

Rohit’s struggles have not gone unnoticed. Former England captain Michael Vaughan criticized his shot selection, labeling it “timid” and expressing that Rohit failed to adapt to Cummins’ bowling strategy. Harsha Bhogle echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the expectations placed on Rohit to contribute significantly to the team’s total, especially when India needed him most. With just 19 runs across three innings in this series so far, Rohit’s form has raised eyebrows and led to speculation about his future in Test cricket. Fans too on social media didn’t mince their words as the 37 year old got trolled left, right and centre after his failure with the willow.
