Bangladesh‘s star all-rounder, Mahmudullah, has announced his retirement from T20 international cricket, effective at the conclusion of the ongoing series against India. The decision came as a surprise to many, given his continued success in the format. However, Mahmudullah, who is approaching his 39th birthday, believes it is the right time to step away and focus on his ODI career.
“I am retiring from T20I cricket after the last game of this series. I was pre-decided before coming here,” Mahmudullah told reporters.
A decision made with careful consideration
Mahmudullah revealed that he had discussed his retirement plans with his family, the Bangladesh cricket team’s coaching staff, captain, chief selector, and board president. The consensus among all parties was that it was a wise move, particularly with the upcoming ODI World Cup less than two years away.
“I had a chat with my family. I spoke to the coach, captain, chief selector and the board president as well. I think it is the right time to move on from this format for me and the team. Especially with the World Cup coming up in less than two years. I will concentrate on the one-day game,” he added.

Mahmudullah’s transformation as a finisher
One of the defining moments of Mahmudullah’s T20I career was his transformation into a devastating finisher. Under the guidance of former coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, Mahmudullah developed a penchant for hitting sixes and became a fearsome force in the lower order. His ability to win matches with the bat has earned him a place in the hearts of Bangladesh cricket fans.
Memorable moments of Mahmudullah
Mahmudullah’s T20I career has been filled with memorable moments. His unbeaten 43 off 18 balls against Sri Lanka in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy match, which secured Bangladesh’s victory in a tense finish, is often cited as one of his finest innings. However, Mahmudullah also acknowledged the frustration of losing key matches, such as the 2016 T20 World Cup defeat against India.

The future of Bangladesh Cricket
Mahmudullah’s retirement leaves a void in the Bangladesh T20I team. However, there are several promising young players who have the potential to fill his shoes. The key will be for the coaching staff and captain to provide the necessary support and guidance to these players as they develop their skills.
As Mahmudullah bids farewell to T20I cricket, he leaves behind a legacy of achievement and inspiration. His contributions to Bangladesh cricket will be remembered for years to come.
