In a significant development for cricket fans and the Indian Premier League (IPL), former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has announced that he will not return as the bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Steyn, who has been an influential figure in SRH’s coaching setup, expressed his gratitude towards the franchise while confirming his continued involvement with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league.

Dale Steyn’s grateful goodbye

Steyn took to social media to share his sentiments, stating, “A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025.”

His departure marks the end of a chapter where he played a pivotal role in nurturing young talents like Umran Malik and other promising pacers within the team. While stepping away from SRH, Steyn will maintain his coaching responsibilities with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, a team that has already made a mark by winning both editions of the SA20 league. He emphasized his commitment to achieving further success with this franchise.

“However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. Two time winners here in SA20, let’s try make it THREE in a row,” he added, showcasing his determination to build on their past victories.

A season of change for Sunrisers Hyderabad

Earlier this year, Steyn had opted out of IPL 2024 due to personal reasons, leading SRH to appoint former New Zealand cricketer James Franklin as their bowling coach. Franklin worked alongside head coach Daniel Vettori during a season that saw SRH reach the finals for the first time since 2018. Their successful run culminated in a final against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), although they ultimately fell short of clinching the title.

Steyn’s legacy and impact

Steyn’s impact on SRH cannot be overstated. Having played for several franchises in the IPL—including Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Lions—his transition from player to coach has been marked by significant contributions. His expertise and experience have been instrumental in shaping the bowling unit of SRH, making him a respected figure in the cricketing community.

As SRH prepares for the next season, they may consider retaining their current coaching staff due to their recent successes under Vettori and Franklin. The franchise will undoubtedly miss Steyn’s presence but can take solace in his ongoing contributions to cricket through his role with Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
