Chris Woakes, England’s star all-rounder, has been a pivotal player for both his national team and various domestic leagues. Known for his versatility and consistent performances, Woakes has been a crucial asset in England’s cricketing successes over the years. His absence from the professional cricketing scene has been notably felt by fans and teammates alike.

Chris Woakes’ absence from competitive cricket

Woakes last appeared on the field for the Sharjah Warriors in the International League T20 (ILT20) back in February. He was expected to play for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 but opted out of the tournament. Additionally, he was left out of England’s squad for the T20 World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies this month. Furthermore, Woakes has not yet featured for Warwickshire in the County Championship this season, prompting widespread speculation about his prolonged absence.

The true reason behind Woakes’ absence

Speculation surrounding Woakes’ decision to step away from cricket included theories about self-preservation from injuries ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 or simply needing a break from the demanding schedule. However, the real reason emerged through an emotional Instagram story where Woakes revealed the passing of his father, Roger Woakes, last month. He expressed his deep sorrow and the need to be with his family during this challenging period.

“The last month has been the most challenging of my life when unfortunately, my Dad passed away at the beginning of May. I’ve spent the last few weeks with the people most important to me, my family. We’re all obviously grieving and trying to get through what is undoubtedly the hardest moments in our lives,” Woakes wrote in an Instagram post.

” It’s times like this that perspective is at its greatest. I will be back playing cricket for Warwickshire, who my Dad loved dearly when the time is right for me and my family. I know playing cricket for Warwickshire and England made my Dad incredibly proud. I look forward to doing that again in the near future,” added Woakes.
