England have announced significant changes to their white-ball setup ahead of the upcoming series against Australia, with Jos Buttler ruled out of the T20I matches due to a calf injury.

Jos Buttler’s injury concerns

Jos, the regular white-ball captain, has been sidelined after experiencing a setback in his recovery from a calf injury that previously kept him out of the T20 Blast. The injury has prevented him from participating in the series against Australia, where he was expected to lead the team following a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year. Buttler’s last appearance for England was during the T20 World Cup semi-final against India in June.

The England management is hopeful that Buttler will recover in time for the five-match ODI series that follows the T20Is, but his availability remains uncertain.

New T20I captain for Australia series

With Buttler unavailable, Phil Salt has been named captain for the T20 series. Salt has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket and has previously played in the T20 format for England, making him a suitable choice to lead the side.

In addition to Salt’s appointment, the England squad for the T20I series has seen the inclusion of several new faces. Jamie Overton has been added to the T20I squad, while Jordan Cox, who was already part of the T20I setup, has been included in the ODI squad as a backup wicketkeeper. The selectors have also called up uncapped players like Josh Hull, Jacob Bethell and John Turner, indicating a shift towards building a fresh squad for the future.

The T20I series against Australia kicks off at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on September 11, followed by matches in Cardiff and Manchester. The ODIs will commence on September 19, with England looking to bounce back after a series of disappointing performances in recent international tournaments.
