Mukesh Kumar takes a sensational caught-and-bowled to remove Tilak Varma for a duck in DC vs MI game

The electric atmosphere of the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi set the stage for an excitinh encounter as the Delhi Capitals (DC) hosted Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 8th match of the IPL 2026 season this Saturday.

After winning the toss and electing to field, DC captain Axar Patel’s decision paid immediate dividends. While the spotlight often shines on the power-hitters, it was the clinical precision of Indian pacer Mukesh Kumar that stole the headlines during a chaotic third over that left the MI top order in tatters.

Mukesh Kumar’s spectacular caught-and-bowled sends Tilak Varma packing for a duck

The defining moment of the Powerplay occurred in the 2.5 over, a sequence that will likely feature in the season’s highlight reels. Mukesh, breathing fire after already dismissing opener Ryan Rickelton just two balls prior, delivered a masterclass in change-of-pace bowling. Operating at 114kph, Mukesh unleashed a subtle, full-length slower ball aimed around the off-stump.

Tilak Varma, usually a composed presence in the MI middle order, was completely deceived by the lack of pace. Committing to the shot far too early, Varma could only chip the ball back toward the bowler. The drama escalated as Mukesh, in his follow-through, lost his footing and began to slip. Despite the wobble and the awkward body position, he showed elite reflexes to grab the ball cleanly before hitting the turf. The dismissal sent Varma back to the dugout for a two-ball duck, leaving the Mumbai dugout in a state of disbelief. Mukesh’s ability to outfox a player of Varma’s caliber with a neat slower ball, a skill he jokingly credited to learning from teammate Lungi Ngidi, proved to be the ultimate game-changer.

Early batting collapse leaves Mumbai Indians searching for answers

The spectacular caught-and-bowl was the knockout punch in a disastrous start for the visitors. At one stage, Mumbai Indians were reeling at 18/2 within the first three overs. Mukesh’s opening burst of 2-0-12-2 provided the Capitals with the perfect platform, maintaining a suffocating economy rate of 6.00.

While the veteran Rohit Sharma attempted to rebuild the innings with a breezy 35 off 26 balls (including five boundaries and a six), the pressure from the DC bowling unit was relentless. Patel eventually broke the 53-run recovery stand by removing Rohit in the 10th over. By the midpoint of the innings, MI stood at 80/3 after 11 overs, with the live forecast projecting a modest total of 174, well below the par score usually expected on this ground.

With Suryakumar Yadav (29 not out off 23) tasked with the rescue mission, the onus shifted to the middle order to navigate the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Patel. For DC, the early inroads made by Mukesh have not only boosted their momentum but also exposed the vulnerability of a star-studded MI lineup under lights in the capital.
