Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has picked the batting order of Shreyas Iyer for India in the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, beginning on January 21 in Nagpur. Pathan believes Iyer’s improved game against fast bowling, coupled with his long-established dominance against spin, makes him the ideal candidate for the role in the shortest format.
Shreyas Iyer drafted in as Tilak Varma replacement
Iyer has been included in the Indian squad for the first three T20Is after Tilak Varma was ruled out of the first three T20Is due to an abdominal surgery. With the team management looking for stability in the top order, Iyer’s experience and versatility have come into focus ahead of the contest against the Black Caps.
Currently leading Punjab Kings in domestic and franchise cricket, Iyer returns to the T20I setup with a point to prove, especially after working extensively on areas that were once considered weaknesses in his game.

Speaking during a discussion on Robin Uthappa’s YouTube channel, Pathan made it clear that he sees no debate over Iyer’s batting position. According to him, the right-hander fits perfectly at number three, a role that demands both adaptability and authority.
Pathan explained that Iyer has always been a strong player of spin bowling, with the ability to use his feet, find gaps, and clear the infield when required. However, what has impressed him most in recent times is Iyer’s calmness and control against high-quality pace bowling.
“Shreyas at number three, no doubt. Shreyas has the ability to play spin really well. That is one thing. He can play big shots, stand and deliver, and he can also maneuver the ball really well. But whoever saw him in the last IPL, I think he was playing the fast bowlers exceptionally well. I remember that one shot he played against Bumrah off a yorker,” said Pathan.

Pathan hails Iyer’s performance in IPL
Pathan referred to Iyer’s performances in the Indian Premier League 2025, where the batter consistently handled fast bowlers with confidence. One particular moment that stood out was a boundary struck off Jasprit Bumrah during a match between Mumbai Indians and Punjab.
Recounting the shot, Pathan highlighted how Iyer picked up Bumrah’s yorker late and guided it past the third-man region for four. He pointed out that merely surviving Bumrah’s yorkers is a challenge for most batters, but Iyer’s ability to place the ball precisely showcased his composure and awareness.
According to Pathan, Iyer’s understanding of field placements and his patience at the crease indicate a batter who knows exactly where his scoring options lie, even against the very best.
“It was a Mumbai vs Punjab match. Bumrah bowled a yorker and he hit it through the off side for four. I mean, surviving Bumrah’s yorker itself is a tough job. This guy is actually taking his time, playing the ball late, and placing it exactly where he wants, especially towards third man. He knows where the fielder is and is creating scoring shots,” added Pathan.
