Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has opened up regarding the future of Babar Azam as captain of the Pakistan cricket team. The team’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States of America (USA), resulting in a first-round exit, has raised serious questions about Babar’s leadership abilities. Despite being reinstated earlier this year after Shaheen Afridi‘s tenure, Babar has faced challenges, including a series of defeats against New Zealand at home, losses in T20Is in Ireland and a failed campaign in England.

Calls for leadership change

Within the PCB, there is a growing chorus advocating for a change in leadership. Some factions support the return of Shaheen Afridi as captain, citing his previous stint and potential to rejuvenate the team. Conversely, others favour Mohammad Rizwan, considering his impressive performances and leadership qualities. The debate emphasized dissatisfaction with recent team performances and the desire for a captain who can inspire and lead Pakistan to consistent victories.

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi’s perspective on Babar Azam

PCB Chief Naqvi has emphasized a methodical approach to addressing Babar’s future as captain. Naqvi highlighted the importance of consultations with cricketing experts, including former players, to gather diverse perspectives on leadership. Additionally, Gary Kirsten, the team’s white-ball coach, will play a crucial role in providing insights and recommendations based on his assessment of the team’s dynamics and performances.

“No decision taken so far related to Babar Azam. One former player has submitted a very comprehensive report on what needs to be done to improve cricket. But I will take no decisions out of anger or based on what is being said on social media,” Naqvi was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports.

“I have asked them (Kirsten and Mahmood) to come here as I want to talk to them in person and in detail based on Kirsten’s report on the World Cup. Kirsten has given a very detailed report on the team and it will help us a lot to chalk out our future course of action,” Naqvi concluded.
