In a heartwarming development during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Mega Auction on November 24, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured the services of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for INR 9.75 crore. Ashwin, who was a vital part of the CSK squad from 2009 to 2015, has returned to the franchise after a decade-long gap.

Chennai’s aggressive bidding saw them outmaneuver stiff competition from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Rajasthan Royals (RR). This reunion will see Ashwin team up with stalwarts like MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, rekindling memories of their past successes.

Ravichandran Ashwin expresses nostalgia and gratitude

Ashwin shared his excitement and nostalgia in a video posted on CSK’s official Instagram handle. He credited the franchise for shaping his international career and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent CSK again.

“They say life is a circle. I played for them from 2008 to 2015. I am always indebted to them. Whatever I learnt at CSK then has propelled me this far in international cricket. It’s been 10 years since I played for CSK,” Ashwin said, reflecting on his journey.

He further highlighted the bidding war for his services, likening it to the support he received from CSK during the 2011 IPL auction. “The price, CSK buying me and all that is there. But I feel nostalgic because CSK fought for me during the bidding war like how they did in 2011. It was a trip down memory lane. It’s a very special feeling.”

Excited to reunite with MS Dhoni and CSK fans

Ashwin also expressed admiration for the unwavering support of CSK fans, even when he played against the franchise. “I have seen a lot of ‘Anbuden fans’ banners. When I played for Rajasthan Royals in Chennai, I noticed that CSK fans wouldn’t shout or celebrate when I was bowling or batting.”

The off-spinner is looking forward to reuniting with Dhoni and playing under new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.  He said: “I am so glad to return to CSK. I am looking forward to playing in front of the ever-growing fandom. Looking forward to playing with MS Dhoni and playing under Ruturaj Gaikwad”.

Ashwin’s return to CSK marks the beginning of another chapter in his illustrious IPL career. For the fans, it’s a moment of nostalgia and excitement as one of their favorite players comes back home.
