In a key moment of South Africa’s innings on Day 2 of the 1st Test at Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday (October 22), Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud delivered an exceptional ball to Keshav Maharaj, knocking out his off stump and leaving South Africa in deeper trouble.

Hasan Mahmud’s dazzling delivery sends Keshav Maharaj packing

The last ball of the 65th over was bowled full and started outside the off stump, luring Maharaj into a false sense of security. As it approached, the ball sharply nipped back in, surprising Maharaj, who attempted to cover the line but was caught in no man’s land.

The seam movement was exceptional; it not only swung back but also had enough pace to beat Maharaj’s defensive shot. Stuck on the crease, Maharaj could not adjust his position in time, and the ball breezed past his inside edge, ultimately crashing into the off stump. With Maharaj gone for a duck on just his first ball, South Africa found themselves at 227/8 at that time, and Mahmud’s impressive spell – now at 3 wickets for 51 runs -signaled a significant shift in momentum for Bangladesh, as they looked to capitalize on their newfound advantage.

Kyle Verreynne’s effective partnership with Wiann Mulder for South Africa

Earlier, having resumed their innings at 140/6, South Africa managed to put up a total of 243 runs for the loss of 8 wickets by the end of first session, enjoying a lead of 137 runs at lunchtime on second day. The batting effort was spearheaded by Kyle Verreynne, who remained not out on 77 runs off 105 balls, striking 7 fours along the way. He found solid support from Wiaan Mulder, who contributed a crucial 54 runs, helping South Africa recover from early setbacks. The South African innings saw a flurry of wickets especially on first day, with Hasan Mahmud and Taijul Islam being the standout bowlers for Bangladesh, claiming 3 and 5 wickets, respectively.

Bangladesh’s bowling attack worked tirelessly but struggled to maintain consistent pressure. Mahmud opened the wicket-taking for Bangladesh, claiming key scalps, including the dismissals of Aiden Markram. Taijul was particularly effective, showcasing his skills with a brilliant five-wicket haul, consistently troubling the South African batters and ensuring that the visitors faced challenges throughout their innings.
