Lahiru Kumara shatters David Bedingham stumps

On Day 1 of the first Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Kingsmead, Durban, saw a remarkable moment of brilliance from Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiru Kumara when he produced an unplayable delivery to clean bowled South Africa middle-order batter David Bedingham with his incredible fast bowling.

Lahiru Kumara stuns David Bedingham with a masterful delivery

In the 18th over of the South African innings Kumara’s delivery clocked at 142 kph, pitched outside off, and sharply nipped back in. Bedingham, attempting to defend, was undone as the ball breached the bat-pad gap, grazed the inside edge, and crashed into the off-stump, sending it cartwheeling. The pace and seam movement of the ball left Bedingham with no answer, adding just 4 runs from 6 balls. This spectacular dismissal underscored Kumara’s skill and reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s strong start in helpful bowling conditions.

Here’s the video:

Kumara’s brilliance wasn’t limited to Bedingham’s wicket. Earlier in the session, he dismissed South Africa’s promising young batter Tristan Stubbs for 16 runs. Kumara’s accuracy and pace made him the standout performer as Sri Lanka capitalized on a pitch offering assistance to the bowlers. His two key breakthroughs were instrumental in putting South Africa under pressure early on.

South Africa’s struggles continue as Sri Lanka holds the upper hand

At the end of the first session, South Africa found themselves at 80 for the loss of 4 wickets in 20.4 overs, reeling from a disciplined and fiery bowling performance by Sri Lanka. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Kumara, exploited the conditions expertly to restrict the Proteas.

South African skipper Temba Bavuma remains a beacon of hope for his side, anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 28 off 47 balls. Alongside him, wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne is at the crease, battling to rebuild the innings after the early setbacks.
