In Match 23 of The Hundred Women’s Competition 2024, London Spirit Women showcased their dominance with a brilliant performance against Manchester Originals Women on Friday (August 9) at Lord’s, London. One of the standout moments of the match was a stunning catch taken by the Spirit’s bowler Sarah Glenn off her own bowling, which led to the dismissal of the Originals batter Evelyn Jones.

Sarah Glenn’s stunning return catch

The incident occurred on the 32nd ball of the Originals’ innings. Glenn delivered a teasing ball on a good length, just outside the off stump. Jones was completely outfoxed by the flight and failed to reach the pitch of the delivery. Reaching forward, she awkwardly extended her bat in an attempt to make contact but only managed a weak poke back towards the bowler. Glenn reacts sharply, bending low to her right, and completed a brilliant, low catch to dismiss Jones for just one run off three balls. This wicket left Originals struggling at 32/3 after 32 balls.

London Spirit’s bowlers shine against Manchester Originals

Earlier, the Spirit won the toss and opted to bowl first. Their decision paid off early as off-spinner Charlotte Dean set the tone by dismissing the dangerous Laura Wolvaardt for just five runs on the 15th ball. Beth Mooney tried to stabilize the innings but was cut short by Dean, who claimed her second wicket after Mooney had scored 20 off 17 balls.

Glenn, continuing her excellent form, struck with her second delivery, further weakening the Originals’ position. Kathryn Bryce offered some resistance with a well-crafted 32 off 27 balls, including two boundaries and a six, but she too fell to Glenn, who claimed her second wicket of the match. Fritha Morris contributed a quick 17 off 13 balls towards the end, but the Originals could only muster 112/7 in their 100 balls. Charlotte Dean was the pick of the bowlers for London Spirit, finishing with three wickets.

Spirit Women chase down the target with ease

Chasing a modest target of 113, the Spirit Women faced early setbacks, losing Meg Lanning (4) and Cordelia Griffith (9) cheaply. However, Georgia Redmayne and Heather Knight came together to steady the innings. The pair put on a crucial partnership for the third wicket, ensuring there were no further inroads from the Originals’ bowlers.

Redmayne played a match-winning knock, scoring an unbeaten 66, while skipper Knight provided solid support with an unbeaten 29. Despite efforts from Lauren Filer and Alice Monaghan, who each picked up a wicket, the Originals were unable to defend their total. The Spirit reached the target with eight balls to spare, securing a comfortable eight-wicket victory.
